Staying Cool in an RV During a Heat Wave

Living or traveling in an RV during a heat wave can be very uncomfortable if you're not prepared. RVs can get hot quickly because they are small spaces and often sit in the sun. But with some smart tips, you can keep your RV cooler and enjoy your trip, even in very hot weather.

One of the best things you can do is park your RV in the shade. If you’re at a campsite, try to find a spot under trees or on the side of a building that blocks the sun. Parking with the RV’s largest windows facing away from the sun can also help keep it cooler inside. If shade is not available, use reflective window covers or blackout curtains to block sunlight.

Air conditioning is very important during a heat wave. Make sure your AC unit is working well before your trip. Clean the filters and close off rooms you’re not using, so cool air stays where you need it most. If you don’t have AC or want to save power, use fans. A good fan can move air around and make the inside feel cooler.

You can also use roof vents to let hot air rise and escape. Open windows on the cooler side of the RV to let in fresh air, especially at night. Cooking outside instead of inside the RV is another great tip. Using the oven or stove will heat up your RV fast, so grilling outdoors or eating cold meals is a better choice.

Try to use power during cooler times of the day. Run appliances early in the morning or in the evening when it’s not so hot. Avoid using lights, TVs, or electronics in the middle of the day, as they can give off extra heat.

Wear light clothing and drink lots of water to stay cool. Rest during the hottest part of the day and do your activities in the early morning or late evening. Staying inside during the afternoon can help you avoid the worst heat.

By using shade, good airflow, and smart habits, you can keep your RV cooler and safer during a heat wave. With a little planning, your RV trip can still be fun and comfortable, even when the weather is hot.
